Fortica Fortress (Španjola)
On a hill above the old town of Hvar, its faithful protector, the town fortress of Fortica, also known as Španjola – the Spanish fortress, proudly stands. It is best reached on foot. Head from the main town gate, take the stone steps through the fragrant vegetation and by the palace to the entrance to the fortress. Explore the museum and cannon walls and don't miss the magnificent panoramic view of the town of Hvar and the Pakleni islands!

• The Fortica Fortress (Španjola) is one of the symbols of the town of Hvar
• The foundations of today's fortification system were laid in 1282 by the Venetian building decree, and the fortress was completed in 1551
• In 1571, the fortress saved Hvar from a Turkish invasion, but in 1579 it was severely damaged by lightning
• During the Austrian rule (19th century), the fortress was restored, and today it houses a collection of amphorae and other exhibits from antiquity and the Middle Ages
