More details
- Visit Mljet National Park on the western end of the island and discover an amazing phenomenon – an islet embraced by an island! A boat will take you to the islet of Sveta Marija where you can tour the Benedictine monastery, a 12th century church and 2 chapels. This was once the home of the monastery abbots who gained international renown for their culture and knowledge from all fields of the sciences and arts.
- While on Mljet you simply must bathe in the Veliko and Malo Jezero saltwater lakes – they will fascinate you with their beauty and endless tranquillity. There is a walking path around the lakes for pedestrians and cyclists, while in the woods you'll find hiking trails. There is no need to fear poisonous snakes as they have been eliminated by the mongooses that live in the park.
- Mljet is Croatia's most forested island – graced by holm oak, South European flowering ash, Aleppo pine and stone pine. So breathe deep and relax in this perfect and magnificent natural setting.
- Stir up your adventurous spirit and follow in the steps of Ulysses – visit Ulysses' cave on the south end of the island. Legend has it that this was the cave in which the beautiful nymph Calypso, who had fallen desperately in love with Ulysses, held him captive for 7 years. The cave can be visited from the sea by boat only when the waters are calm (there are organised tours) and by land taking a car and then on foot regardless of the weather.
- Sailors will find anchorage in Polače cove on the northwest side of the island in the national park – the best natural anchorage on the entire Adriatic coast.
- Visit Polače, one of the oldest inhabited places on the island, with a Roman palace dated to the 3rd century and an early Christian basilica.
- If you enjoy the sand, be sure to look for the sandy beach known as Saplunara on the far eastern end of the island featuring a restaurant, a beach bar and snacks for refreshment.
- Sample the specialities of Mljet, including eels, young goat, goat cheese and wild game in the local konoba and restaurants – and be sure to wash it all down with the great local wines.
