Malacological Museum

Visit the Malacological Museum in the centre of the town Makarska and discover the attractive collection of sea snails and bivalves of the Adriatic Sea and from around the world. The most famous Croatian collection of shells once inhabited by molluscs, as well as a valuable herbarium of the Biokovo mountain, and a smaller palaeontology collection are waiting for you. You can admire the molluscs' building and design skills applied to their small houses, the little architectural wonders of nature.

• The Museum was opened to the public on 30 April 1963 in the old part of the Franciscan monastery, which is a protected cultural heritage site.
• Most of the 3,000+ exhibits of shells are from the Adriatic Sea, but there are also numerous species inhabiting the tropical and subtropical seas, which feature attractive colours and forms.
• The fossil collection includes fossils of ammonites, rudists, molluscs – snails and bivalves, urchins, corals, and algae. They provide an overview of the ancient sea life: from the Triassic to the Neogene.
• The collection of autochthonous plants of the Biokovo area is especially fragrant, and it contains valuable advice on their cultivation, if you want to test your green thumb.
• A visit to this museum is a reminder of the importance of contributing to the preservation of maritime life systems.
