Maloston Bay and Ston

  • Location

    Ston

Maloston Bay is a famous nature reserve located about sixty kilometres away from Dubrovnik. Due to the proximity of the mouth of the Neretva, the waters here are brackish, which makes the bay perfect for the farming of the finest shellfish in all of Croatia. Ston, the town with the longest walls in all of Europe and home of the oldest salt pan in the world, is also located in its embrace.

More details

  • The bay of Mali Ston is best known for the oysters that have been harvested here since the 16th century. While you're here be sure to visit one of the small boats on which you can sample shellfish and the famed oysters (and while you're at it - see if the claims of their aphrodisiac effect hold up).
  • Visit Ston and the impressive 5.5 kilometres of walls that link Ston and Mali Ston. On the way you'll find as many as 40 towers and 5 forts with the stroll lasting about a half an hour. The walls were erected over 4 centuries and served primarily to defend the salt works that were a precious source of income for the Republic of Dubrovnik – they brought in as much as 15,900 ducats a year.
  • Descend from the wall to the Ston salt works – a true open-air museum. Learn all about the oldest salt works in Europe in which salt continues to be produced by hand as it was 700 years ago – with the help of the sea, sun and wind. You can take part in the salt harvest if you are here from mid July to September and you can take home as much as you can collect!
  • If you enjoy walks, head out on Napoleon's road on its Ston-Gornje Selo-Ponikve section. The route covers 7 km (about 2.5 hours), and features attractive views of the sea, several sacral buildings, drystone walls and vineyards of the plavac grape variety. Don't forget your camera!
