While visiting the Konavle region, make sure to stop by at Sokolkula, a historical fort that the Republic of Ragusa claimed in 1420. It is located in the town of Dunave in Konavle and can be described as pared down as, after it was abandoned in 1672, the local population began to use its stones to build their homes and boundary walls. Today, its preserved and carefully maintained remains impart lessons on the history of Croatia and the Republic of Ragusa to tourists.

  • The renovation of this spectacular fortress whose beauty will leave you breathless lasted almost half a century! Luckily, since 2013 all visitors can enjoy the full glory of this prized building.
  • If you want to know how a strategically important tower resisted war dangers and stood up to the marauders, learn about the rich history hidden behind the tower walls which included facilities such as the water tank, armoury, wine and food shed, castellan's lodging, sentry box, soldiers' building and lodgings for women and children from the nearby villages.
  • Climb to the top and enjoy the most beautiful view of the Konavle area or take a walk along the beautiful promenade around the Sokol tower.
  • Learn everything there is to know about the life in the tower in the renovated castellan's house where you'll find an impressive archaeological collection.
  • There is an interesting bit of medieval gossip told about the Sokol tower! The tower's castellan was the Dubrovnik poet Ilija Crijević (1463 – 1520) who was banished from the tower without honours by the Republic of Dubrovnik because he had the habit of bringing women to the tower. You're guessing, this custom was strictly forbidden at the time.
