Start the Dvigrad tour out of the well-known tourist destination of Špadići in Poreč by cycling towards Sv. Lovreč. While pedalling about this area, which is known as “Red Istria” for its red soil, you will cruise along winding roads that lead you through Limska Draga right to the ruins of Dvigrad. This mediaeval town once protected the interior of Istria from attacks by sea. After a slightly difficult climb out of Dvigrad, you will reach the town of Kanfanar. Then coast back down into Limska Draga and once again climb towards the magical Lim bay, where you will be treated to a beautiful view of the entire channel. Get your camera ready and take a few shots to immortalise this unique panorama of Mediterranean nature. After a brief rest, continue riding along a picturesque coastal trail that passes through romantic Vrsar and gourmet paradise Funtana, leading you back to the starting point at Špadići in Poreč.

- Have the appearance and name of Dvigrad piqued your interest? In the middle ages, the town consisted of two castles: Moncastello and Castel Parentino (Croatian: dva = two, grad (arh.) = fortress). The best preserved ruins are on the Moncastello hill, while the neighbouring Castel Parentino hill was host to another fortress, which was abandoned around the 10th century CE. Part of the town on Moncastello was inhabited until 1714, when the Church of St. Sophia was officially abandoned. You can still view the ruins of this very church today. In Dvigrad, you can also see the double fortification walls, connected by three city gates and three towers, built in the 14th century. It is interesting to note that the walls hold the remains of more than 200 buildings and the paths that connected them.
- Visit the famous St. Romuald's Cave in the Lim bay, where the bones of more than 40 species of animal have been found, such as cave bear, cave lion, leopard, cave hyena and others. Stone Age tools were also found in the cave, and today it is home to a colony of greater mouse-eared bats.
- Find your favourite beach in the fishing town of Vrsar, whose archipelago holds 18 uninhabited islets. You can also visit a castle here – the bishop’s summer residence and church, the parish Church of St. Martin on the town’s main square, and Giacomo Casanova Street, named after the famous Italian seducer who twice visited Vrsar.
- As you’re already in Poreč, don’t miss the chance to explore the streets of the old town centre, which are imbued with the town’s rich history. Also peek into the Euphrasian Basilica, and see for yourself why it was added to the UNESCO world cultural heritage list in 1997!
